Decision-Making Is Not Easy

Sometimes we reflect on our actions and wonder how we would’ve reacted had someone told us the same thing or done the same thing. In decision-making, we are not allowed to make mistakes. As a decision-maker, we should know what needs to be done. We should know when it needs to be done. We also, allegedly should know what the outcome or result will be in the end.

However, let’s be honest. Who doesn’t make mistakes? I know we talked about owning up to our mistakes previously. I find this extremely important as a leader. We are not perfect. We are not the end all be all. We are human. Our minds run in various directions—especially when dealing with the lives of others.

During a conference call, I remember hearing my leader’s dread while approaching the decision that needed to be made. The thought process was, what if it was me. Then what would you all do? However, sometimes we are blinded by our own sentiments and fail to see the big picture. Fortunately, my leader takes the advice of the council. No decision can be worse than a less-than-perfect decision. This is one thing that makes this person such a great leader. They listen to their people. Take in their advice.

Leaders who have others to help and advise them need to listen to their people. They need to listen critically, with intention, and for understanding. A person who listens to respond will miss much of what is happening. However, when you listen to understand, your thoughts may flow more manageable. It allows you to see the bigger picture and see everything that needs to be done. It provides the avenue to make an informed decision, rather than one that you may regret later.
